Battery Importers, Distributors, Suppliers & Retailers
Portable, Light Means of Transport (LMT), Starting Light Ignition (SLI), Industrial, Electric Vehicle (EV), Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) & Universal Power Supply (UPS) Batteries are subject to the European Batteries Regulation. When these batteries are contained in battery powered products, they are also governed by the European WEEE Directive and Irish WEEE Regulations.
As such importers, suppliers, distributors and retailers of all types of batteries and products powered by batteries may have Producer Responsibility Obligations and should register with Producer Register Limited (PRL).
Retailers, suppliers, and distributors of batteries and related battery powered electrical products are also obligated to accept the return of batteries and battery powered products for free recycling at end of life as follows:
Retailers
Portable Household Batteries
Retailers who sell portable batteries are obligated to accept these and other similar waste batteries back from consumers for free recycling at end-of-life.
Light Means of Transport (LMT) Batteries
Retailers supplying LMT batteries, including those sold within LMT products such as e-bikes, e-scooters, motorised golf bags (with batteries), and other e-mobility units, as well as replacement batteries for LMT products, are obligated to take back these and other similar waste batteries for free recycling at end-of-life.
Battery Powered Electrical Products
Retailers who sell battery powered electrical products are obliged to take back these products at end of life, on a one-for-one like-for-like basis for free electrical recycling.
Retailers who sell portable batteries, LMT batteries & battery powered products, or other electrical products can sign up as a WEEE Ireland Free Recycling Take back Point by contacting operations@weeeireland.ie.
Importers, Suppliers & Distributors
Importers, suppliers and distributors at the top of the supply chain in Ireland may have Producer Responsibility and must register with Producer Register Limited and engage as a Member of Compliance Scheme such as WEEE Ireland to support takeback and recycling of waste batteries.
Farm Fence Batteries
Importers, suppliers and distributors of farm fence batteries are responsible for recycling these batteries when they reach end-of-life.
Starting Light Ignition (SLI) Batteries
Importers, suppliers and distributors of Starting Light Ignition (SLI) batteries are responsible for recycling these batteries when they reach end-of-life.
Electric Vehicle (EV) Batteries
Importers, Suppliers and distributors of electrical vehicle (EV) batteries are responsible for recycling these batteries when they reach end-of-life.
Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) & Universal Power Supply Batteries (UPS)
Importers, suppliers and distributors of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) & Universal Power Supply Batteries (UPS) are responsible for recycling these batteries when they reach end-of-life.
