November 2, 2026
WEEE Ireland is pleased to announce the appointment of Rod McCarthy as CEO-Designate, following four years as a non-executive member of its Board. Rod will succeed Leo Donovan, who is due to step down as chief executive after more than 21 years with the organisation.
Rod brings over 35 years of experience in services industries, most recently serving as Group Managing Director within DCC plc’s technology pillar (now DCC Energy). He provided executive and strategic leadership across six of the group’s businesses including Exertis Ireland, Hypertec, Macro Evolution Services, Exertis Supply Chain Services, Ztorm and circular economy business MTR Group Limited. His experience spans business turnaround, acquisition integration and operational improvement.
Welcoming Rod’s appointment, WEEE Ireland Chair Richard Broderick said: “Rod brings significant leadership and industry experience, including a strong understanding of technical services and the circular economy.”
“I’m delighted to be joining WEEE Ireland and look forward to working with its talented team, Members and stakeholders to help shape the organisation’s next chapters,” said Rod McCarthy.
The appointment marks a new chapter for WEEE Ireland as Leo prepares to step down. Leo has led the organisation since its inception in 2005, overseeing its development as Ireland’s leading electrical and battery compliance scheme and its work with Members, public bodies, collection and recycling partners.
Thanking Leo on behalf of the Board, Richard Broderick said: “I would like to thank Leo on behalf of the Board of WEEE Ireland for his diligent work at the helm of WEEE Ireland over his tenure of 21 years.” He added: “The Board would like to wish him every success in his future endeavours.”
Reflecting on his time with WEEE Ireland, Leo thanked the team, Board and external stakeholders, including the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, Producer Register Ltd, local authorities, retailers and the contractors who have collected and treated WEEE and waste batteries over the last 21 years.
“I look forward to seeing the organisation move from strength to strength as it faces up to the new challenges of the circular economy and recycling new waste streams,” said Leo Donovan.
All at WEEE Ireland warmly welcome Rod to his new role and thank Leo for his years of service. We wish Leo the very best in his next chapter and look forward to continuing our work with Members and stakeholders.
