Schools Awareness Project

In partnership with Rehab Recycle, WEEE Ireland has been developing a pilot project to raise awareness of WEEE in national schools.

Since April 2006, we have visited more than 500 Primary schools and the feedback has been highly promising. We have also donated a refurbished recycled computer to each participating school.

The Process:

  1. All interested Primary schools contact Rehab Recycle on (01) 4597540. They will arrange a suitable day for the school to take part and give them an overview of what to expect.
  2. On the day itself, a presentation is held in the assembly area promoting the benefits of electrical and battery recycling. The interaction with the school children enables them to recognize and identify WEEE, prompted by our "show & tell" section.
  3. Each child receives a handout explaining the WEEE Recycling process, an activity sheet with games relating to WEEE and a present to take home.
  4. The program also provides for the pupils and parents to dispose of small WEEE through a collection day - encouraging children and parents to participate in the electrical and battery recycling.
  5. These days will increase awareness throughout the entire community while also increasing the levels of collection of household WEEE.

'Sparky' the WEEE Ireland Mascot:

Developed in 2007, Sparky has proved extremely constructive in conveying the message of WEEE Ireland to young and old alike.

He is a key part not only in the presentation to the schools but also in the campaign to raise awareness throughout the entire community by being instantly recognisable as a symbol for good recycling practice.
